Perinatal Mental Health for Maternity Staff

Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of Royale Hayat Hospital conducted a full day Master Class for healthcare professionals on ‘Essential Skills in Perinatal Mental Health for Maternity Staff’ on 24th, Nov. 2018. Dr. Abubakr Elmardi, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Women’s Services at Royale Hayat Hospital organized the event. Dr. Mariam AlAwadhi, Consultant Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Kuwait University presented a quick review of major psychiatric disorders during pregnancy; perinatal screening tools and their use to health care providers; barriers to screening; Optimal use of screeningand effect on patient care and Overview of current project at Maternity hospital in Kuwait.

The event was organized in collaboration with the International Forum for Wellbeing in Pregnancy (IFWIP) London, Kuwait Institute for Medical Specializations (KIMS), and the Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) Kuwait.



Obstetricians, Psychiatrists, Midwives, Maternity Managers, General Practitioners other healthcare professionals attended the symposium. The symposium covered subjects such as the assessment, identification and treatment of different mental health conditions during perinatal period, necessity for counseling during pregnancy and breastfeeding, effective multidisciplinary care planning, impact of stress and its influence on the fetus and the outcome are few of the topics covered during this symposium.

The program activities include lectures, videos, case discussions and interactive sessions. DrRaja Gangopadhyay, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust (UK)and the Founder of International Forum for Wellbeing In Pregnancy (IFWIP) delivered four lectures on “Stress: Myths & Facts”, “Common Perinatal Mental Health conditions,” “Use of medications in pregnancy,” and “Resilience & Brain Health: Nurture”

Dr. Parijat Bhattacharjee also had three lectures entitled “Psychological changes during pregnancy,” “Impact of mental health conditions during pregnancy,” and “Screening & Care Pathways.” The Symposium included case studies, workshops on antenatal and labour & postpartum care with a question & answer session.
